XINGHUO Glass Cuts Energy Use per Unit by 15%

On World Environment Day, XINGHUO Glass set out the environmental commitments it is working to at its factory in Jiangsu, covering energy use in the furnace, the glass it puts back into production, and the products it sells to overseas buyers. The company also reported progress on the two measures it tracks most closely: energy consumption per unit of product and the share of waste glass that is recycled.

Cutting Energy Use at the Source

Over the past few years the company has rebuilt parts of its melting and forming lines to bring fuel consumption down. Natural gas has replaced the heavier fuels used in earlier years, and waste heat from the furnaces is now recovered and fed back into the process instead of being vented. Energy consumption per unit of product is about 15% lower than before the upgrade, and the same changes have cut emissions at the stack.

Purchasing has moved in the same direction. Raw materials, packaging, and consumables are now bought against environmental criteria, and suppliers are asked to document where their material comes from and how it is processed.

Waste Glass Goes Back Into the Batch

Glass that is broken during forming, trimmed off at the finishing stage, or rejected at final inspection used to leave the plant as waste. The company now sorts it by colour and composition and returns it to the melting batch, where it works as cullet and melts at a lower temperature than raw sand and soda ash.

The recycling rate stands above 85%. The change has cut both the amount of raw material the plant buys and the volume of solid waste it sends out, and it is one of the few measures in glassmaking that lowers cost and emissions at the same time.

Reusable Glassware Instead of Disposables

The larger part of what the factory makes is built to be washed and used again. The company's crystal glass drinkware and borosilicate glass water cups, food storage boxes, and serving pieces are sold to households and to the hospitality trade, and one glass container displaces a long run of single-use plastic items over the years it stays in use.

That argument matters more to buyers than it used to. Retailers and hotel groups in Europe and North America now ask suppliers for durability data and material declarations, and the company answers those requests through its quality and compliance work and its custom processing service.

What the Factory Floor Can Change

Alongside the equipment work, the company runs environmental training for production staff and organises volunteer days for tree planting and waste sorting. Office procedures have moved to electronic documents, and staff are encouraged to use public transport and carpooling for the commute.

Jimmy Wang, CEO of XINGHUO Glass, said: "Most of what we can change sits in the factory rather than in a report. The furnace, the waste glass we put back into the batch, the products we design to be used for years — that is where the numbers come from. We will keep investing there, and we will keep asking our suppliers to do the same."

The company plans to continue with furnace efficiency and cullet recovery, and to extend the environmental criteria it uses in purchasing to more of its supply chain.
